Charred Composite Shingle

Glass fiber and charred and ashed mineral filled tar is present. The lower right of center white agglomerate is fully ashed. The black material still contains charred tar.

Transmitted Off-Crossed Polarized Light

Definition/Function:

This is burnt glass fiber/tar composite shingle material. The tar used in the composite is 60% clay filler and 40% tar. The larger mineral grains on the surface of the shingle are not present in this sample. Tar soaks into the clay and is somewhat protected from oxidation.
